On Rising: Recipes and Rituals for Joyful Mornings is a beautiful new cookbook written by my friend, Deborah Johnson. It is as gorgeous as it is helpful. It’s more than just a cookbook! This lovely resource is brimming with ideas for establishing a morning routine, breathing exercises, stretches, morning reflection questions, mealtime questions, menus for multiple occasions, and more. With a focus on holistic wellness, this book is like a friend encouraging you to take care of yourself in the most gentle way. It is the kind of cookbook that belongs on the shelves of Anthropologie. The kind you want to display in your kitchen.
The recipes look delicious! I can’t wait to make the flour tortillas, biscuits, chorizo, and I love her method for crispy bacon. If I could do eggs, I would want to try the cacio e pepe omelette or green eggs and ham. There is a wide range of recipe options, some simple and thorough for the new cook and some that are a little more fancy and fun for those who love to play in the kitchen. She also includes a great list of ‘kitchen crushes’ – her favorite tools and ingredients to have on hand. This cookbook would make the perfect Christmas gift for a new grad, a newlywed, or your mother-in-law who has everything.
I’m so proud of Deborah! There is something wildly special about watching a friend achieve a long-time dream. She has been thinking about this book for years and she quit her job in 2021 to go all in on bringing this book to life. Not only is On Rising full of incredible recipes, beautiful pictures, and lots of extras, but it is also full of thoughtful words. She tells stories about her family, farm life, hospitality, her sweet husband, and invites you to take a seat at her table.
I cannot recommend On Rising enough! Deborah was so sweet to give readers 10% off the purchase of her book with the code: marissaten. I plan to stock up on a few for gifts! I’m excited to give away a copy of On Rising this weekend on Instagram. I’m pairing it with one of my favorite Bible Studies and one of my kitchen crushes, a Geometry kitchen towel – the perfect recipe for a meaningful morning.
